Karisma Kapoor starrer Mentalhood web series is a show that is dedicated to all the mothers and celebrates motherhood. It triggers to weave the relationship struggles that are faced by modern age mothers and how they meet the identity crisis.
Indian society has imaged the mothers as pure, idealistic, and dutiful. Like they can never make mistakes and have to sacrifice their whole life for the sake of their family. During the 80s and 90s Indian mothers were presented as an ideal of society, creating a stereotype.
However, the modern-day directors want to break this stereotype for women. They are trying to push away this one-dimensional portrait of mothers. ZEE5 and ALTBalaji offer their latest offering Mentalhood that is specially crafted to focus on the imperfections, insecurities, doubts, and mistakes of a mother. Also, it is an initial step taken in the onscreen representation of a mother.
Mentalhood is a depiction of modern age women who are trying to make it through to the end of the day without going out of their senses. Meira Sharma (Karisma Kapoor) Namrata (Shilpa Shukla), Anuja Joshi (Sandhya Mridul), Deeksha Shah (Shruti Seth) and Preeti Khosla (Tillotama Shome) who are the mothers in this web series and all seem to be in a race, and the competition is all about being a good mother.
But as we all know, when we quest to become perfect are imperfections cover us. This is what has happened to them. In this quest, they become competitive and put a lot of pressure on their expectations on their children. They try to spy on their kids and do all this under the society where mothers are blamed for their children’s mistakes.
In the show all the problems that are faced by the new mommy have been showcased very beautifully- the responsibilities of being a mother, choosing between your dreams and responsibilities as a parent, taking a break from children that you want before you lose the sanity that is left inside you and dissonance between loving your children unconditionally and fulfilling their demands.
It tells the audience that it is not easy to be a mommy no matter you are a work from home mommy, a full-time working mommy, or stay at home mommy. The struggle they have to face is real!
As the show unfolds, it becomes a guidebook for motherhood and parenting. Meira’s quotes from her blog towards the end of the episode can be compiled in a guiding manual and can be handed over to all the newbie mothers. Now, we are not sure whether the makers have actually taken out them from a parenting book, but please don’t come behind us for that!
Although the moms in Mentalhood will take their own sweet time to build your interest in their story, just like other web series. We bet that if you manage the first three below average, very poorly performed episodes, you will get through the entire series.
Tillotama Shome, Sandhya Mridul, Shruti Seth Sanjay Suri and Shilpa Shukla, deliver their best performances, whereas Karisma Kapoor and Dino Morea will just get better with their jobs in each episode.
Now, Mentalhood is not all about motherhood; at times, the father’s perspective is also included. Mostly fathers are also portrayed as irresponsible beings. However, Mentalhood remains a show that imparts lessons on good parenting.
